This list outlines states’ health and safety guidance and considerations for winter holidays (e.g., Christmas, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, New Year’s) and seasonal travel. This list does not address county or municipal guidance. Please note this list is not exhaustive of statewide actions.

In addition to the below guidance, state guidance in effect regarding travel, in-person gatherings, and houses of worship is also applicable during the holidays. Please see NGA’s Coronavirus Resource Page for additional information around state mitigation measures, including traveler’s quarantines, business reopening, gathering limits, face covering requirements, and more.

CDC has released considerations for Holiday Celebrations and Small Gatherings to help minimize risk and prevent the spread of COVID-19 as many across the country plan for holiday celebrations and small gatherings. The considerations were updated to reflect small and informal gatherings of family and friends from across multiple households that often occur during the holiday season. The Thanksgiving tip sheet is a resource to help people take steps to make their Thanksgivings safer. These considerations complement other resources to help minimize risk and keep family, friends, and communities safer.
