Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Secretary General Jagan Chapagain of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). They discussed IFRC’s tremendous contributions to tackling global health and humanitarian challenges around the world, including their work responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
USAID is a long-time partner of IFRC and the Administrator thanked Secretary General Chapagain for IFRC’s partnership as the Agency works to combat COVID-19 and build local capacity to respond to future outbreaks. In addition, the Administrator recognized the significant role of IFRC’s local partners in providing humanitarian assistance around the world, including in Afghanistan. The Administrator and the Secretary General also underscored the importance of addressing climate change, given the growing scale of climate-induced shocks on vulnerable communities. The two pledged to continue coordinating closely and seeking opportunities to leverage each other’s expertise.
