Today, Administrator Power met with Vietnam Deputy Minister of National Defense Hoang Xuan Chien. The Administrator thanked Deputy Minister Chien for our long-standing partnership with the Government of Vietnam and for the Ministry of National Defense’s strong leadership, and close cooperation, on addressing war legacy issues. The Administrator affirmed USAID’s commitment to overcoming war legacies, including jointly cleaning up dioxin contamination at Bien Hoa Airbase, strengthening health and social services to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities in Vietnam, regardless of cause, and improving DNA analysis techniques to find and identify the remains of Vietnamese combatants who are unaccounted for. The Administrator also thanked Deputy Minister Chien for the Government of Vietnam’s many years of assistance in locating and accounting for American MIA remains from the Vietnam War.
