[ST. PAUL, MN] – This weekend, Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan will kick off the 2022 walleye fishing season in Minnesota at the Governor’s Fishing Opener. Events will take place throughout Friday and Saturday around Cass Lake, Minnesota and Lake Winnibigoshish. The weekend’s schedule of events is below.

“The Opener is the official start of the fishing season and the unofficial start to summer in Minnesota,” said Governor Walz. “This weekend highlights the importance of fishing and its positive impact on our businesses, tourism, and outdoor economy. I am proud to fish alongside half-a-million Minnesotan anglers on our thousands of lakes, streams, and rivers.”

“Fishing is something we can all enjoy, whether it’s a pier in the Twin Cities, trout stream in Southeast Minnesota, or up north on the beautiful Lake Winnibigoshish,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “I am excited to carry on this important and fun tradition this weekend at Lake Winnie and hopefully catch some walleye!”

Schedule of Events

On Friday morning, Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan will stop by Radio Row to talk with outdoor reporters from around the state. In the afternoon, they will stop by three local businesses: Norway Beach Resort, Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters, and the Leech Lake Market to highlight the importance of Minnesota’s vibrant hospitality and retail industries. On Friday evening, Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan will attend a Fishing Opener community celebration hosted by the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe to meet with community and industry leaders from across the region.
